One of the most accomplished American soccer players ever, John Harkes was a fixture in the midfield for the National Team as captain in the mid 1990s. He led D.C. United to two MLS titles in ’96 and ’97 as well as the 1998 Interamerican Cup championship.


A five-time Major League Soccer All-Star, Harkes is almost as well known on the soccer field in the United States as he is in England, where he played a U.S. record six times at England's famed Wembley Stadium.

John Harkes U.S. National Team

Earned 90 caps between 1987 and 2000 and scored six times... A veteran of the 1990 and 1994 FIFA World Cups... Captain of the squad from March 1996 to March 1998... After an eight-month absence, he earned a recall to participate in the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup in Mexico... Led the team in assists in 1996, collecting five in 13 matches... Was the co-MVP of the 1995 Copa America tournament... Played 270 minutes in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, including every minute of every first-round game... Was forced to sit out the Round of 16 game vs. Brazil after receiving a second yellow card against Romania... Was named MVP of U.S. Cup ’92, scoring two goals and leading the squad to the championship... Started all three games for the USA in the 1990 World Cup in Italy...
